"A runaway slave with a twisted foot during the Civil War, Jacobs doesn't even have a name of his own - but he does know how to read. Jacobs heads North and joins the militia, then leaves with a band of deserters. Things turn violent as they're stealing food when they injure a family, which sickens Jacobs who blames himself for not speaking out and stopping it. Eventually Jacobs learns to take his power, speak his truth and find freedom the limitations of inner - as well as outer - slavery."
